Antique Playing Card, tarot, suits, printers block, 19th century Joseph Henseler.
This amazing printers plate features 12 different suit card designs,, 4 kings, 4 Queens, and 4 jacks. This printers block is etched metal set in a wood block dating it to around the mid to late 1800s or possibly the very early 1900s. Likely this is a one of a kind example of this particular form of playing card.
At the base of one of the kings the name Joseph while in the shield of one of the Jacks is the name Henseler.
Likely these were produced as an early playing card or gambling deck, but could have crossed over in to pip card or tarot style fortune telling.
The entire block measures roughly 11x9.25x.75 inches with each card measuring roughly 3.5x2.25 inches.
This piece was acquired out of a large collection of early printing resources and prints from a Portland Maine estate.
All of our antique items are sold as found as is with no returns. Please ask questions prior to bidding and I will do my best to help you.
